1971-1974: A Series of Triumphs
Between 1971 and 1974, Sturman manufactures 60,000 machines and places them in almost every State of the Union. LB loops are now projected 24 hours a day in the Land of Freedom! They were also distributed by Sturman's salesmen in the first "adult stores" of America with impressive success. They became an inspiration for American sex filmmakers, and as such, a pain in the ass of the system. While legalization in the US was still far in the future, it now appeared unstoppable on a popular level.
1973: French Blue
In 1973, in his studios of Breda, Holland, LB shoots his first feature film, originally titled "Penetration" later changed into "French Blue." In addition to the first cartoon by great French satirist Sine', produced by Braun's Dutch production company, the film also shows four of LB's most amusing loops shot between 1970 and 1972, and showcases the scintillating Brigitte Maier, BraunŐs star and protegee.
Again the great Gods and Goddesses of Sex helped LB achieve another breakthrough. In the end of April 1974, a mere week before the beginning of the Cannes Film Festival, the conservative, sexophobic French president Pompidou dies. In the ensued political incertitude, having "Penetration" already edited and ready to go, LB succeeds in smuggling its 8 big reels into Cannes. Consequently, despite heavy censorship still imposed upon the people of France and the rest of Europe with the exception of Scandinavia and Holland, LB was able to show for the first time ever a hardcore movie (Penetration) at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1974. Word of mouth worked wonders on the Croisette. Penetration became a striking success opening the doors of the most prestigious world stage for all subsequent porn movies.
1975: Sensations
In 1974-75, Braun shoots his masterpiece "Sensations" with the financial backing of his friend Rueben Sturman who in return gets all theatrical rights for North America. But first they screen "Sensations" at the Cannes Festival of 1975 in order to check out public reactions. The outcome surpasses even the wildest imagination. Every night the crowds jam the 800-seat theater, booked by BraunŐs and SturmanŐs people for the showing of the movie. An overwhelming audience of 1,200 men and women, packed the theater to the limits. Throughout the wide screen projections, they expressed their excitement with screams and applause, loosing all kinds of inhibitions, most of them even enjoying some sex on the spot.
Distributors from all over the world, now realizing that sooner or later legalization would arrive to their nations, bid large sums for the theatrical rights of the film. In America, Sturman organizes a lavish campaign, and opens "Sensations" in New York on Novembr 4th, 1975, with an unprecedented full-page ad on The New York Times (Sunday: November 2nd, 1975 issue)
